One hundred eighteen students from the University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB), through its National Service Training Program (NSTP) Office, joined in a tree-planting activity at the UPB Arboretum in Sabkil, Itogon, on May 22.

Commission on Higher Education of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CHED-CAR), through Regional Memorandum No. 20, series of 2021, calls on higher education institutions to participate in Scholars and grant beneficiaries' Action in Greening Initiative Program (SAGIP) 2023, from May 22-26.

NSTP students from Civic Welfare and Training Service (CWTS) and Literacy Training Service (LTS) programs participated in the activity which is part of the commemoration of the 29th anniversary of CHED.

NSTP facilitators, through the spearheading of Ms. Alodia Rei Leung, conducted a short orientation about the safety measures and gave a few reminders before the activity started.

A total of 118 seedlings were planted during the activity heeding three SDGs or the Sustainable Development Goals 11 (Sustainable Communities), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land).

Janine Ganapin, an LTS student who joined the event, said that the activity was a good initiative that allowed students to explore outside their own bubbles. “It serves the purpose naman of NSTP na we go beyond our institutions to serve our communities, especially our environment,” she added.

NSTP facilitator Mr. Felicisimo Galletes Jr. encouraged all NSTP students to join in such activities and said that the university should expect more students to join next year considering that it is an annual event.

He also shared that the activity was not originally listed on the NSTP calendar. “It was a great beginning for us to teach our students the importance of planting trees, especially in this digital age,” he added.
