Baguio non-profit leads for citywide zero waste campaign

Non-profit environmental organization Zero Waste Baguio Inc. promoted sustainable practices and a zero waste lifestyle in a public orientation on May 13 at the Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary, Baguio City.

Beng Garcia, Zero Waste Baguio, Inc. board member, said in an interview with the Baguio Herald Express on May 13 that the orientation could show people they can live a zero waste lifestyle.

“It is doable, and we can do more for our environment and our world,” she said.

Garcia said there was diversity among attendees, with some finding the event through Facebook and attending out of their initiative.

Baguio youth primarily attended the orientation, which Garcia appreciated.

Garcia added that the youth’s interest in the environment gives hope for the future.

“The fact that there are more young people who attended today is very encouraging kasi madalas natin sinasabi diba na ang kabataan ay ang pag-asa ng bayan kaso hindi eh ang kabataan ang pinagpapasahan natin ng problema,” she said.

Garcia also mentioned the progress and challenges faced in achieving a zero waste lifestyle in Baguio City.

"We have great initiatives, but we still have a long way to go, kumbaga may 40% na tayong natatahak na daan but we still have 60% more to push for in terms of a zero waste lifestyle for Baguio City," she said.

According to Baguio City’s 2022 Waste Analysis and Characterization Study conducted by the City Solid Waste Board, 581,792.60 kilograms of waste is generated daily in the city.

Besides zero waste efforts in the city, the local government and Philippine National Oil Company–Renewables Corporation have signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for the city's waste-to-energy plant.

The initiative aims to address waste management issues, generate renewable energy and ensure a reliable energy supply for the city.
