EXTRA FOGGY, EXTRA CHILLY. 5:00 p.m. snapshots of the situation along Legarda Road show the impacts of Typhoon Betty in Baguio City. Strong winds and heavy rains have resulted in fewer people outside compared to a typical afternoon in the country's summer capital. This is despite the typhoon weakening, with winds of 150 km/h and gustiness of 185 km/h. Dubbed the strongest typhoon of 2023, Typhoon Betty, also known internationally as Supertyphoon Mawar, rapidly intensified after devastating Guam last Wednesday. An article from The Washington Post confirmed that scientists have discovered the increased frequency of typhoons' rapid intensification, which is attributed to rising ocean temperatures exacerbated by worsening climate change.
