FOR ALL TO SEE. Visitors are welcomed by Cordillera faces painted on the walls at a jeepney terminal, on Sunday, May 21. Venazir Martinez, a UP Baguio Fine Arts graduate, painted this narrative project she called “Hila-bana.” The word is derived from hilbanahan or “temporary stitching.” The red strings, the identity marker of her work, connect parts of the murals into a whole story. As the first UNESCO Creative City in the Philippines, the local government has been supporting various creative pursuits, including the creation of murals that call for environmental actions. Martinez said painting murals is "the simplest way to activate people’s appreciation for arts and local culture and influence sustainable tourism.” She added, “It creates significant simulation for creative growth and collaboration from both local and national governments to support the creation of livable and resilient cities." Martinez is also the founder of Sining Eskinita, a street art exhibition that transforms the streets of Baguio into lively alleys.
